چکیده
Gastrointestinal infections causing diarrhea represent a huge public health problem in all parts of the world. Every year there are about three billion cases of diarrheal disease worldwide, resulting from contaminated food and water sources. In developing countries, diarrheal disease is the second-leading cause of death in children (second only to pneumonia), particularly in children younger than 5 years of age. A major contributor to this global problem is the fact that approximately one billion people lack access to appropriate water sources, and around 2.5 billion have no access to basic sanitation. In developed countries, while diarrheal diseases are better controlled it still represents a common affliction, especially among children and the elderly. Among the more common bacteria that infect the gastrointestinal tract and cause disease are Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Typhi, Camplylobacter jejuni, Shigella flexneri, enteropathogenic E. coli and Clostridium difficile. Understanding the various ways in which these bacterial pathogens induce diarrhea is imperative if it is to be controlled. Special Issue: Gut Microbial Communities in Health and Disease
The complex and ancient relationships between animal hosts and the microbial communities that inhabit their digestive tracts have become the focus of intense research in recent years. As a result, our understanding of gut microbial ecology and of the evolutionary and physiologic impacts of gut microbial communities in animal hosts has grown markedly. Indeed, members of the gut microbiota have n...

متن کاملChanges in the composition and function of the gut microbiota in celiac disease
Evidence is supported the hypothesis that any changes in the composition and function of the gut microbiota play a fundamental role in a number of chronic inflammatory diseases including celiac disease (CD). In the last decade, several culture-independent methods have been developed to identify the components of the human microbiome. The study of microbiota based on nucleic acid analysis found ...
متن کاملHuman Microbiome
Humans are almost identical in their genetic pattern, but the slight differences in our DNA lead to remarkable phenotypic variation among the human population. There are a variety of microbial communities and their genes (microbiomes) in the human body that play an essential role in human health and disease. The microbes inhabiting our bodies is quite a bit more variable, with only a third of i...
متن کاملHow gut microbes talk to organs: The role of endocrine and nervous routes
BACKGROUND Changes in gut microbiota composition and activity have been associated with different metabolic disorders, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiometabolic disorders. Recent evidence suggests that different organs are directly under the influence of bacterial metabolites that may directly or indirectly regulate physiological and pathological processes. SCOPE OF REVIEW We reviewed ...
